Sherwood in the chair, resolutions were passed appointing a Defence Committee, who are also to arrange the plan of action in case of an alarm. A plan of a redoubt is also to be prepared for the protection of the women and children, and the Government is to be asked to eDgage the unemployed in its construction. The Government is also to be requested to forward Snider rifles and revolvers, with ammunition, for the volunteers, and to place the powder magazine in a safe position. Satisfaction was expressed at the re-appointment of Major Noake as commander of the volunteers, as the meeting had full confidence in his ability and firmness, and desired him to be in permanent command. The Hawera settlers were congratulated on the way they had treated the Maori ploughmen, and the meeting pledged itself to do likewise should operations be commenced here or anywhere near. Waitaba, This Day, 11.35 a.m. The natives have just commenced ploughing at this end. y 8 8
