SUPPOSED ATTEMPTED SUICIDE OF MR. W. H. T. STEWART, ASSISTANT DISTRICT ENGINEER.

A telegram was received to x *day by Inspector Atcheson from Constable Donnelly, Palmerston, Manawatu, to the following effect :—: — "Mr. W. H. T. Stewart, acting as Assistant Engineer for this district under the Provincial Government, was fonnd at , his camp near here shot through the chest. It is supposed that the wound, which has not yet proved fatal, was self-inflicted, and done wilfully. A Terry rifle belonging to Mr. Stewart was the weapon used. He was discovered about noon yesterday. There is some slight chance of his recovery." Mr. Stewart is about twenty-five years of age. He had been for some years employed in the Public Works Department of the General Government as one of tho assistant engineers, but about nine months ago accepted an appointment in the Provincial service. He mas steadily advancing in his profession, and had become engaged to a young lady residing in this city. Untoward circumstances arose, and the lady jilted him. This preyed upon bis mind, he became despondent, took temporarily to drinking, and ended by making this rash attempt upon his life. No further details are to hand of what surgical aid he has received. Particulars have been telegraphed for. I ' — ¦
