TO THE EDITOR OF THE EVENING POST.

Sir — I saw - a letter in your issue of last night signed " G. Howard," remarking upon a review of the performances of " Jonathan Bradford," at the Odd Fellows' Hall, on Monday evening, that appeared in the NewZealand Times on Tnesday morning, and I fully agree with the -writer's comments on the bad taste of the criticisms indulged in generally by the press. I respeetf ulty think that every encouragement should be given to those who, as citizens, endeavour to get up a little amusement amongst ourselves, instead | of lauding as a rule any and everyone who come amongst us as self-styled professional particularly a goodly few who have lately honoured us with their august presence, most graciously poeketiug our money, and carefully avoidiug the common-place eustoui of discharging their trifling debts. I repeat,

every encouragement, ehoujd be given to otu amateurs as a means of weaning them froe: the fleeting pleasures and tJempUtions of tht tavern. I would have taKenno notice of tht tetter in question only-Aeeause the write doubts the authority of the Times. As to th production of the .above drama, I was a« much surprised .as to how the Times could have learned the face, but as the writer states he is one of the old residents, and pleases „ to ignore the same, I beg to assure him, without the least fear of contradiction, that "Jonathan Bradford" was- played at the Britannia Saloon, subsequently known as the Lyceum Theatre* in. November, 1846, and several times after that date.. The remainder of the letter being* unworthy of notice, I am, &c, " ~ J. H. Marriott.
