ST. JOHN'S CHURCH
ANNUAL MEETING OF
PARISHIONERS.
The Vicar (the Rev. N. A. Friberg) presided over a good attendance at the annual meeting of parishioners of St. John's Church, Leeston, last evening, and a very happy spirit characterised the meeting. The financial statements showed that both the general account and the St. John's account had improved during the year, but neither yet was in a sound condition. On the motion of Messrs Free and Stephens, it was decided to organise a special effort for the general fund some time before March 31 next.
It was decided, on the motion of Mrs Henderson, seconded by* Mr Free, to run a series of eight euchre evenings, beginning on Saturday, June 8. The prizes for the first evening were donated by Mr Free, and for the aggregate (six best scores) Mr L. Prosser gave the prize for the men and Mr Bongard that for the women". Mrs Rowell was elected convener for the committee which was formed to organise the series.
The Vicar, in his review of the past year, spoke with appreciation of the spirit of goodwill that characterised the parishioners in all parts of the parish. Hearty* votes of thanks were passed to the lay-reader, synodsman, choirmaster, organists, altar guild, vestry, auditor, Mothers' Union, Dramatic Circle, special preachers for the quarterly services, and to the Guardian.
The Vicar again nominated Mr Wm. Hurford as minister's warden, and Mr T. Free was re-elected people's warden and Mr F. W. Page secretary and treasurer. The following vestry was chosen:—Messrs R. Ford, A. J. Henderson, Johnson, A. A. McMillan, L. Prosser, F. B. Woodard and Dr. Volckman.
At the close of the meeting, Mr T. A. Stephens, in a charming speech expressed the sympathy of the parishioners with the Vicar in his recent illness and notified him that they had quite determined that he must take a holiday in the North Island immediately for three weeks; and that they had arranged that this would be without cost to himself.
The Vicar was completely surprised, and though he did not like the idea of being away* so long, he could do nothing else than very gratefully accept their kindness. Musical honours concluded a very cheerful and happy annual meeting.
