SHINGLE PIT ACCIDENT

COUNCIL EMPLOYEE INJURED.

MR, W. LUGG IN HOSPITAL.

A serious accident befell one of the workmen employed by the Springs County Council, Mr W. Lugg, last Friday morning. Mr Lugg was carting shingle from the Cemetery Pit for blinding some of the roads at Lincoln. Between 10 and 10.30 o'clock Messrs James McVinnie and O'Grady, who were passing nearby, noticed his horses coming out of the side of the pit on their own. On going to investigate, they found Mr Lugg lying in the pit badly hurt. It is surmised that the dray cither capsized upon him or that the wheel ran over him. His injuries consisted of a compound fracture of the left leg about three inches above the ankle. His foot was doubled right back and the bone was protruding. The* foot was badly crushed.

Mrs E. Neale and Mr Martin Dartnail rendered first aid, pending the arrival of Dr E. J". Cooke, who was attending a case in a Christehurch hospital at the time, but who hurried up to Lincoln on being summoned. The doctor ordered an ambulance car to take the injured man to hospital. But for the timely arrival v of Messrs McVinnie and O'Grady, Mr Lugg may have lain in the pit for several hours unnoticed. The accident is thought to have been caused through the breaking of part of the harness on one of the horses.

Mr Lugg has been involved in several mishaps lately, and his misfortune has brought him the sympathy of many friends in the Springs County, where he is well known and greatly respected. His present injury is causing him severe pain. . Mr Alex. Thompson, chairman of the County Council, and Mr H. JVeale, the county engineer, visited Mr Lugg in hospital yesterday.
