Ellesmere.

ANOTHER BREAK IN FARM

WORK.

The rain which set in throughout the Eliesmere district about midnight on Saturday continued at intervals throughout Monday and up to yesterday morning, the total fall registered at Leeston being 163 points, while at Southbridge the figures were 152 points. During last week very substantial progress was made with farm work and the area sown in wheat would run into several thousands of acres. In a number of cases individual farmers managed to get in up to a hundred acres, and had the fine weather held out for another week by far the greater portion of the winter wheat would have been in the ground. In a good many cases the land is practically ready for sowing and if the weather is favourable for the next ten days or so, it should not be necessary to leave much of the sowing over until the spring. Work on the heavy land is likely to be held up fora few .days owing to the rain.

There is still a good supply of grass and as the weather has not been very cold so far the feed supply should, improve. Oats and other grain" sown for green feed* as well as various grasses are still doing splendidly, and there appears to be no cause for anxiety about th,e feeding of stock during the winter. Mangolds have not yet finished growing, so that although some crops ■ are tieing used, pitting is not general and comparatively littfe W will be done for a few weekl!^ Potato digging, much of which is being done by machines, is now well forward, and the reports concerning the yields are still very encouraging. All kinds of stock are in good condition. -
