Towards A National Policy.

" That somewhere in this nation an orderly system of political thought should once more emerge, > and assert itself, that political philosophy should come to its own again, seems to me no visionary hope. .The instinct of selfpreservation is strong in every human society, and I for one refuse to believe that the present chaos can continue much longer without driving us to attempt some sort of synthesis, to seek some way out of the existing welter of well-meant but illconceived and mutually conflicting nostrums and expedients. It is a question of life and death to our greatness and progress as a nation; and with so much vigour, so much- open-mindedness, so much earnest if bewildered patriotism, as still characterise our public life, it seems unnatural that direction should be for ever lacking."

Lord Milner.

Abnormal dissurbances are taking place in the sun at present, according to Mr Clement Wragge. He stated at Auckland that as the sun is a great magnet which pulls and deflects the " magnet bar "of this earth, which joins the north and south poles, there is every reasonto believe that the coming winter will! on the whole, be stormy and wet, He also predicts that the succeeding spring will witness ' abundance of rain, with electrical disturbances. The .existing unsets tied weather, says Mr Wragge, is certainly due to the etheric, or wire* less, pull of the sun, and the present disturbances will prove more marked with increased latitude south from Auckland Thus we may expect to hear of stormy weather, with much rain and snow, especially over the South Island. There are indica* tions, however, that conditions-will shortly improve, as the existing sunstorms are becoming negative. We may therefore hope for an early rise in the barometer. That the sun is a great dynamo that 'controls the seasons of the earth by magnetic) \ influence there is no doubt what^k ever, and the recent display of the^^ Aurora Australis was directly due to solar upheavals.
