INQUEST ON THE VICTIM OF THE GUN ACCIDENT.
Dunedin, This day. At the inquest on the body of tho lad Street tho evidence showed that young Hawkcs had received from his father a bog containing the wages of the men at the mine, of which Mr Hawkes, senior, is the manager. The accident occurred in Mr Hawkcs' hut, in which the boys were. Young Hawkes said, " Suppose anyone were to come through the window after the money," and he pointed the gun at the window. One of thcboysnamedßarontoldhimto to take care or there might be an accident, and Hawkcs then lowered tho gun. As he was lowering tho hammer his linger slipped and the gun went off, killing the deceased. Young Hawkes was accustomed to a rifle, having boon drilled at school, and ho was accustomed to shoot with a gun. The lads Hawkcs and Street were cousins. A verdict of accidental death was returned. The jury added a rider to the effect that parents should be careful not to allow young boys out with firearms.
