ROTORUA STRIKES ON ROCK IN FRENCH PASS.
Wellington, This day. The steamer Rotorua, from Nelson and Picton, in going through the French Pass at 11.45 last night, whilst in an eddy the ship's head canted towards the bluff, and in consequence of the steering gear not acting promptly she grazed .sharply on a point opposite the beacon. Captain Anderson at once called all hands on deck, and had the boats cleared away. The wells wore sounded, but, no water was found. Meantime she had been headed into Elmslic's Bay, intending to beach her if necessary, and was kept in that position for half-an-hour. At the end of that time, as no "water was reported in the well, the vessel left for Picton, and thence to Wellington. As the patent slip is engaged the steamer will go on to Lyttclton. An enquiry will probably be held.
