DASTARDLY ATTEMPT TO RAISE A FIRE IN GISBORNE BY AN INCENDIARY.
Gisborne, This day
Between 8 and 9 o'clock last night the Poverty Bay Herald office was fired by an incendiary. A portion of tho printingoffice was destroyed, but no damage was done to the type or machinery. Rain was falling heavily at tho time, and consequently few people were about. AVater was carried by a number of willing hands who came upon the scene at the sound of the fire-boll. Tho same spot Avhcrc the fire Avas discovered last night Avas set fire to a year ago. The block in which the Herald office is situated includes tho Masonic Hotel, the Loan and Mercantile Agency Company's offices, and Messrs Cai'law, Smith and Go's auction mart. Had the incendiary deferred his Avork for a couple of hours later, the dartardly attempt must luia _ resulted in a groat conflagration. The room used by the editor had also been set fire to, but the fire appears to have gone out.
