A man named Aiken, SO years of ago, was found droAvncd in the river Heathcote yesterday. It is supposed that he committed suicide. Mr E. J. Lee announces himself as a candidate for the Solwyn scat. The following ci-oav have boon sclootod to represent Canterbury in the interprovincial race Avith Otago on February 23rd : —Messrs J. O. Jones, E. M. Boulton, J. F. Grierson, and A. C. Lean (stroke). They will row in their hcav boat just received from Messrs Saa'addle and AVinchip, England. An eight-roomed house at the Okutu A .illoy, Little River, Avas burned iloaa _i at 2 o'clock on Sunday morning. It belonged to Mr A. Thompson. The family had only time to escape in their nightdresses. The premises Averc uninsured, and a large quantity of cheese, Avith the dairy plant, was destroyed, making the loss about C3OO. The Premier arrived just after midday yesterday, and spent tho afternoon inspecting tho gaol, dock, See., in Lyttelton. He came to Christchurch in the evening, and left for the South this morning. Tho AVaimakariri Harbor Board has suspended their clerk, Mr C. E. Dudley, on account of tho proceedings against him in connection Avith tho Kaiapoi Council's accounts, but there is a A-ciy divided feeling, and notice of motion has been givou to reconsider tho matter. A prisoner named Saunders Avas seriously injured at Lyttelton yesterday by being struck on the back of the head Avith a piece of rock, the effect of a blast. His skull Avas fractured, and he is not expected to survive the injury. Tho cabmen gathered last evening a very largo and orderly meeting to hear their grievance discussed. The chair Avas taken by Mr J. E. Bi-OAvn, chairman of the Tramway Company. Speeches Avcre delivered by the Hon. E. Richardson, Holmes, AVynn-Williams, and AVhitc, M.H.R.'s, Messrs AVeston and D. Reese, and the Rev. ,E. A. Lingard, besides several cab proprietors. The folloAving resolution Avas carried unanimously:—"That this meeting is of opinion that the matter in dispute betAveen the cabmen and the City Council has caused great inconvenience to the public, and respectfully requests the Council to reconsider the Avhole matter ; and this meeting sympathises Avith the cabmen in their endeavor to obtain at once a re-adjustment of the bye-1.-iAV."
