AUCKLAND.
April 29. The Roman Catholic Archbishop Steins is so ill that he is going to Sydney for a change of climate, and possibly to Europe, from whence he may not return.
Edward Williams, of the Bay of Islands, who is on a retired pension, has been appointed a Judge of the Native Lands Court.
Sir George Grey arrived from the Kawau yesterday. He was received by Mr Tole, M.H.R., and other gentlemen. Several hotel-keepers and promoters of lottery schemes have been summoned under the Auckland Municipal Police Act for the purpose of testing the legality of sweeps on races and art unions for prize gifts. Mr Rees has filefl affidavits in the Supreme Court, charging Wickbam, proprietor of the Free Lance, with contempt of Court in referrring to a matter the property of the Court—namely, the libel action Rees v. Wickham. Another information is being laid against Wickham for an article in the Free Lance in November last.
