HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

The aanual meeting of the members of the Auckland Horticultural ' Society was held yesterday in the Museum Buildings at halfpast two o'clock. There were present — Messrs. G-. B. Owen (in the ohair), T, Macffarlane, J. C. Firth, 0. Lewis, W. J. Palmer, Lipscombe, the Rev. E. N. Bree, J, Blacktnore, W. J. Speight. The Hon. Secretary (Mr. T. Kirk) read the minutes of the former meeting, which were confirmed. — On the motion of Mr. Macffarlane, Mr. J. 0. Firth was appointed auditor of the accounts, which were submitted. — The Secretary read the report, which only embraced a period since the 7th December last, as at that meeting the holding of the annual meeting was changed from December to July, and thus the period embraced in the report was a small one. The exhibition which was to have been held in the month of March was postponed owing t» the very dry weather, which would have made it a failure had it been held. It was hoped that the weather would be more propitious during the ensuiug season. The accounts wonld show that there was a balance of £24 Is. 2d. on hand. The balauce-sh eet showed that on the 7th December, 1871, the balance in the Bank of New Zealand was £20 17s. Id. ; subscriptions since received, £4 14s. Gd. ; balance received from Mr. Thomas Macffarlane, £9 18a. 7d. : total, £35 6s. 2d. The expenditure was : Printing and advertising, £9 15s. 6d. ; commission allowed to the collector, £1 9s. 6d. ; balance in bank, £24 Is. 2d. : total, £35 6s. 2d.— The Chairman moved that the report and balance-sheet be adopted. — Mr. J. 0* Firth seconded the proposal, which was unanimously agreed to.— On the motion of Mr. T. Macffarlane, seconded by Mr. Firth, his Honor the Superintendent, T. B. Gillies, Esq., was unanimously eleoted president for the ensuing year.— On the motion of Mr. Macffarlane, Mr. G. B. Owen was re-eleoted to the office of vice-president for the ensuing year. <Jn the motion of Mr. Firth, Mr. T. Kirk, F.L.S., was re-elected to the offices of honorary secretary and treasurer. — The following committee, representing the general members of the Society and the professional gardeners, were elected :— The Hon. J. Farmer, M.L.C. ; Rev. E. N. Bree, M.A. ; Dr. J. L. Campbell j Messrs. J. C. Firth, B. Hay, J. Blackmore, T. Macffarlane, J. "Mason, and W. J. Palmer. —On the motion of Mr. ,J. C. Firth, seconded by the Rev. E. N. Bree, Mr. T. Maoffarlane was unanimously elected to the office. of auditor for 1872. — Some' conversation ensued respecting the time when the- next exhibition wai to be held, when it was decided to hold it in the month of November, the exact date to be fixed by the .committee. —On the motion of Mr. Firth it was retolved that the annual meetings of the Society be held in the future at two o'clock instead of half-past two' o'clock. — A. vote of thanks to the ohair* man terminated the business of the meeting. v
