Esq., J.P.a.] Unlawful Conversion 1 op Money. — Alfred Hawthorn, a seaman lately discharged from the s.s. ' Wellington,' was charged, on the information of Mr. Barnes, with unlawfully convertiug to his own use a sum of £9, overpaid him by the purser, who gave prisoner a £10 note instead of a £1. The error was detected after the vessel left, and, a telegram being forwarded from Nelson, the man was in custody and the money recovered, within fifteen hours. The prisoner, who had previously denied the charge, pleaded guilty in Court; and the prosecutor, as the money had been recovered, expressing a wish notto press the charge, the Bench dismissed him with a caution. Drunkenness.—Dr. Chalmers, for this offence, was fined in the usual amount. Breach of Dog Nuisance Act.—John Bolan, charged with having two unlicensed dogs on his premises, pleaded that there where no dogs on his premises, nor waa he the owner. — Evidence was heard, but the Bench were not convinced, and dismissed the case.
