on the stock to-day. North Devon.— The new shaft is clear of •water, and the manager will starb driving directly. Qubkn of Beauty.— A deposit of 14Soz. was lodged as the result of eleven days, crushing with nine stampers at Vickery'a machine. At the Police Court to-day, Mr. H. Loveday, charged with criminal assault on a child, was remanded until Wednesday, on the application of the piosecution. He \va3 admitted to bail, himself in £100 and two sureties of £100 each. The Rifle Association 2nd class firing resulted :— Kowe, Ist, 34 ; Schoiiold, 2nd, 33 j Lipsey, 3rd, 31. Market very dull. Sales as follow :—: — Moauataiari, 100s. ; Unicorn, Bs. The nomination for the election of a member of the House of Representatives for City of Nelson Eaut took place on Saturday at the Provincial Hall, Kelson. Mr. Lowther Broad was the returning officer. The candidates were Messrs. Luckie, Richmond, and Saunders. A show of hands was taken, and resulted in favour of Mr. Luckie. The polling was taken to-day at the Pro vincial and Odd Fellows' Halls, and resulted as follows : — Mr. Luckie (strong Ministerialist), 307 ; Mr. Richmond (Opposition), 156 j Mr. Saunders (Opposition), 74.
DUNEDIN. Monday. A f fire at the Club was promptly extinguished. The damage done was slight. A caucus of goldfields members determined to insist upon the reconstruction of the Government. Mr. Branigan, formerly Commissioner A.C., received a paralytic stroke on Saturd»y, which has deprived him of the use of the right side. An opposition to Mr. Reids Government has been formed under the leadership of Mr. T. L. Shepherd. The Government have refused to sanction the endowments for the hospital, schools, and benevolent institution causes. The refusal caupes considerable excitement. The Otago members cf the Assembly will consider the matter to-day. It is proposed to call a public meeting.
WELLINGTON. Monday. Information has been received that the Immigration Aid Corporation has ratified Colonel Fielding's purchase of 100,000 acres in the protince of Wellington. In the Appeal Court the case of Mr. Smythies was resumed. Mr. Travers was heard on the other side. Mr. Smythies -will be heard in reply to-morrow. A Washington telegram, dated the 20th April, says that the postal committee reported on the Postal Appropriation Bill with Amendments, doubling China and Brazil steamship services and subsidies. The inquiry into the complaints of the compositors at the Government Printing Office takes place to-day. The B.s. 'Rangatira will leave here to arrive at Auckland about next Friday or Saturday, via Napier. Thes.s. 'Keera' has left Whanganui for Auckland, with a cargo of cattle. The ' Nebraska' left here at 1 p.m. on the 25tb,
INVERCARGILL. Monday. A fire occurred on Sunday at Messrs. Cross and Williams's store, township of Winton. The whole premises were destroyed, nothing being saved. It was insured in the Royal Insurance Company for £750. Its estimated value wts £1,300. i '
