TARANAKI: NATIVE MEETING.
By the arrival of the ' Go-ahead ' yesterday, we have Taranaki papers of Wednesday last. The Herald of that day says :—" The halfyearly meeting which Te Whiti regularly holda atPariaka commenced on Sunday last. Mr. Civil Commissioner Parris, accompanied by several gentlemen, left town on Saturday last to be present. The party arrived at Pariaka during the afternoon of the same day, and were most cordially welcomed by the natives of that village. Te Whiti had ererything prepared for their reception, and on the same evening visited the party and was very friendly. The 'talk' commenced on Sunday, and would continue for some two or three days. Everything was going off very satisfactorily yesterday, and no obstruction, it is expected, will be made to the road works in this district for the future. " On Monday last, at noon, a small house situated in Devon-street, nearly opposite the Red House Hotel, was totally destroyed by fire. The property belonged to Captain King, but was inhabited by Mr. Charlea Hursthouse, who has been living the/c for the last two months. The house was entirely destroyed, together with its contents, which included the manuscript of a work on emigration on which Mr. Hursthouse was engaged.
