OHINEMURI: THE MAIL SER VICE. — PROBABLE RE-OPEN ING.
We (Thames Evening Star) learn from Ohinemuri that Mr. Puckey, Civil Commissioner, left there yesterday to return to the Thames. As to the exact result of his negotiations with Te Hira and the natives, of course nothing definite can be said to be known at present, but we believe that Te Hira, although not about to give a formal consent to the re-opening of the Tauranga mailservice, will yet not actually oppose the transmission of telegrams, which may in all probability commence about the beginning of next month, and will in fact be equivalent to a mail service. The mail bag, so long detained by the obstructive Hauhaus, has been sent back to Tauranga to be given up, so that matters may now be regarded as being in a fair way of settlement. We may mention that we understand that Mr. Puckey in his dealings with the natives has received most effectual assistance from Tarapipi.of the Piako — the King's right-hand man it may be said."
