MELBOURNE.
' Oar commercial news from Melbourne is to the 12fch instant. The Argus oi that date reports :— Rather a quiet day has been paised in the 'import markets, but this is not more thau might have been expected while the mail lettere were in the course of perusal ; it is, however, fully expected that business will open out immediately with more activity. In breadstuff's we observe more inclination to operate in flour, and there is a probability that any parcels of Victorian placed on the market would not be passed over even at £11. A line of 3, 000 bushels of Victorirn wheat has been quitted at about 4s. 9d. There is nothing doing in either oats or barley. Maize hangs rather heavily at 2a lOd to 3s, according to sample. Candles are being s"^ r lily disposed of at full rates, sales of Brandon's being freely made at lid. Currants meet with buyers for trade purposes at 3|d. In sugars we do not hear of much ueing done privately. A. few small parcels of counters have been sold at £30 to £32. Tobaccos do not evince much animation. We learn, however, of a line of fifty quarter-tierces EXL twist having been quitted on private terms. Swiss cigars are much inquired for, but owiDg to the fii nness of holders, who refuse to accept under 40s, no saleß have yet been effected. Stocks, however, both here and in the neighbouring colonies, have been greatly reduced, and there is no sympton of prices going lower. In hops we note a considerable adrance in the home market. We extract the following regarding the new crop from a communication dated 26feh July :: — * f Hops are fully fifteen per cent, dearer' than last month, and blight is undoubted ; many holders will not sell at any price." There is still a large business doing in liquids. Sales of JDKZ geneva are reported again to the extent of 3,500 cases at up to 103. V.H and Co. is also beginning to be more looked after ; we hear of 700 cases hating been placed at 8s 6d and some largo transactions are, moreover, said to be pending in this brand. Hennessys case brandy has been in requeit at advanced rates ; nearly one thousand caiei have changed hands at 25s 6d, and holders refuse to sell more under 265. Trade parcels of Marri&n's ale find buyers at £8 ss, and a line of fifty hogsheads was disposed of at a price sustaining this figure. A parcel of Bass'i ale ha* been placed at £8 ss. The • Hans,' the fii3t ship of the season with new teas, from Foochoo, arrived at the Heads this morning, and will be berthed alongside theHobaon's Bay Railway Pier. Samples ef the cargo will be on view to-morrow at the rooms of the auctioneer.
