WITHDRAWAL DENIED
Incident On Polling Day At Hutt The unusual course of permitting an electoral notification to be broadcast on the morning of the polling was authorized bv the Minister of Broadcasting, Mr. Wilson, on Saturday, when 2YA issued a statement denying a rumour that Mr. N. p. Croft, National Party candidate for Hutt, had withdrawn from the contest. A rumour to this effect had been ofiieially denied by Mr. Croft earlier in the week, but it had apparently persisted. The rumour was that Mr. Croft had intimated his withdrawal, and was urging National Party supporters to vote for the Independent candidate, Mr. John Hogan. Apparently feeling that his previous published denial had not silenced the rumour. Mr. Croft’s committee requested permission on Saturday morning to have the denial broadcast, mid the correct position placed 'before the electors. The Minister of Broadcasting, Mr. Wilson, confirmed last night that a request had been received from Mr. Croft s committee to broadcast the denial. t He considered the request reasonable and fair and had sanctioned the broadcast.
