PARTY GAINS AND LOSSES
General Election Survey
NATIONALISTS’ EXTRA TEN SEATS A net srain of ten seats in the House of Representatives has-been made 'by the National Party, on the general election figures ns they stand at present. At the dissolution of Parliament the party had '*s of the SO seats in the House, the Labour Party had 50. and there were four Independents and one Democratic Labour member. The present position is that the National Parly has increased its strength to 35' members. Labour has dropped to 44. aud there is only one Independent. . , Nine seats were gamed ’by the National I’lirtv at the expense of the Labour Party These were Bay of Islands, Hamilton, Marsden. Masterton, New Plymouth, Oaniaru, Rotorua, Waitemata and Wellington West. The Nationalist candidates in two others, Egmont and Riccarton, previously held by Independents, were also successful. Against these gains has to be offset the party s loss of Eastern Maori. Labours nine losses to the National Party were reduced to a net loss of six seats ‘by its three gains—Eastern Maori from the National Party, Grey Lynn from; Democratic Labour, and Napier from an Independent. , , Details of gains and losses are as follows :— GAIN'S.
