GRIT NUISANCE

Evans Bay Power Station

Sympathy with residents near the Evans Buy power-station was expressed by the mayor, Mr. Hislop, at a meeting of the Wellington City Council last night. He said that the grit nuisance, which made the lives of people in the neighbourhood unbearable, was now worse than ever. The whole locality was being covered by filthy debris. The council had intended to install equipment to remedy the nuisance, but, for reasons beyond its control, the work had been held up. Moreover, the station, originally intended only for stand-by use, had been taken over bj' the Government, and, as a result of the war, was now being run 24 hours a day. Dealing with the plant required to prevent the nuisance, Mr. Hislop said that, for boilers 1 and 2, the motors and starters from England had been received. The grit extractors, made here, were delivered on the site. The two fans made in England were completed, but were waiting for shipping space. No work could be done here till the two fans were delievered.

For boilers 3 and 4, the English motor and part of the fun were due for shipment, but no advice had bieu received. The fan casing was made in Australia and the Australian works now required a special authority to proceed with the work. Arrangements had been made with the Industries and Commerce Department to support the council's application. The local manufacture of the grit collector was well in hand, and it would be available by the time that all the overseas parts were delivered. On two occasions the English part of the equipment was ready, but it was blown up once in the factory and once on the wharf.
