Fire Destroys Cottage FLAMES MAKE RESCUE IMPOSSIBLE (Bv Telegruph—Press Association.) ASHBURTON, April 15. In the worst tragedy in Ashburton County for many years, a young married woman and four children were burnt to death in a cottage at Alford Forest last night. The adult victim was Mrs. Doris Emilie Clifton, aged about 30, wife of William Clifton, shepherd. The eldesl child was a boy of about six. and the youngest was not yet walking. The fire, the cause of which is unknown. was di-eovered by Mrs. Clifton's parents. Mr. and Mrs. R. Pawsey, who live a short ‘distance away, but when they reached tlie spot the interior of the cottage appeared to be a mass of flames. There was no sound from tiiose trapped, and when an endeavour to enter was made, the flames, fanned by a howling gale, enveloped the whole structure, making rescue i m po s.s i b I e.
