SHORTER SHOOTING SEASON
Acclimatization Council Chairman’s Views “All sportsmen will be disappointed with the Government’s decision to close tlie shooting season,' said tlie chairman, Mr. D. J. Gibbs, at last night’s meeting of the Wellington Acclimatization Society’s council in bis report on the shooting season. 'T think the Government has made a mistake as both soldiers and industrial workers arrange their annual holidays to tit in with the shooting, and this year they will he unable to enjoy their well-earned leave.” continued Mr. Gibbs.
■'lf tlie Government wanted to conserve the ammunition or requisition the guns, the roll of licence-holders would have meant a great saving in time and trouble. Shotguns are not registered, and it would lie some time before they could be requisitioned. Most sportsmen have a few cartridges left over from last season, and do not expect the Government, to supply them, and never have.” The society had had a most successful year witii pheasants and ducks, and reports from all quaiters stated there was an abundance of game everywhere. The loss in licence fees was serious to the society. It might mean a curtailment of its activities, which would tend to hamper rather than help the war effort.
