A MINOR INDUSTRY
Growth Of Wool-Spinning In Masterton Wool-spinning is becoming something of a minor industry in Masterton, and every week a number of women assemble for an afternoon’s spinning. On Thursday the gathering was held at : the home of the Misses Morrison, Lansdowne, when 16 wheels were in use. Meetings are also held at the residences of Mrs. W. A. Todd and Mrs. D. Cameron. Mrs. W. H. Robieson has acted as instructor to the group, which now numbers 22. The start of the home-spinning movement lay in the shortage of heavy wools for pullovers and seaboot stockings for men in the Mercantile Marine and on minesweepers. However, some of the members are now spinning splendid examples of fine wool, and though the requirements of men on the minesweepers and of the Mercantile Marine are primary considerations still, donations of garments made from fine spun wool are now being made to others outside this category. Friends of mem bens of the group have supplied the fleeces for spinning.
