Lady Newall’s 4 Address At Y.W.C.A. Annual Meeting

A message for the young people present was given by her Excellency, Lady Newall, when she addressed the annual meeting of the YAV.C.A. in M el lington last night. “Day by day we build our own future. What we read and think and see moulds our lives for better or worse, just as the food we eat and things we drink build up our bodies or destroy them,” she said. “You young girls are the ones we depend on. The sign of the blue, triangle of the women’s association aud the red tilangle of the men’s were signs or warmth, welcome and companionship and in New Zealand the associations were performing a marvellous service, Sl Mrs. l( J. S. Martin, president of the association, welcomed her Excellency, who was met by a guard of honour composed of Y.W.C.A. members of the St. John Ambulance Association of Voluntary Aids. The fact that Lady Newall had consented to become their patroness and her interest in the work were a great encouragement to the association, Mrs. Martin said. She explained that girls from 13 years of age to grandmothers of SO belonged to the Y.W.C.A. in Wellington and for each there was a special interest. Miss D. M. Lynn spoke to the annual report and Mrs. P. M. Cameron io the balance-sheet. Mr. Leigh Hunt, of the advisory board, congratulated the association on its year’s work. Mrs. Martin was re-elected president and Mrs. Knox Gilmer, Misses Toulson and Veitch were re-elected to the board of directors, new members being Mesdames T. L. Darby, P. Gladstone Hughes, A. Lawsou and Miss L. C. Speedy. . . Lady Newall, who was accompanied by Miss Wultou, received a lovely bouquet from one of the girls and later club representatives were presented to her. The campers’ choir gave items. Those on the stage with her Excellency and Mrs. Martin were Mrs. P. Fraser, wife of tlie Prime Minister, the mayoress of Wellington, Mrs. T. C. A. Hislop, Mrs. David Smith, president of the Y.W.C.A. of New Zealand, Mrs. R. Pearson, vice-president, Miss E. Law, national general secretary, Miss D. M. Lynn, general secretary, Mrs. P. M. Cameron, lion, treasurer, Miss M. Chappell, recording seetjdary, Mrs. A. D. Priestley, member of the board of directors, Mr. and Mrs. Leigh Hunt, Miss Walton and Mr. W. M. Page, honorary architect to the association.
