SNOW LEOPARD

Wanganui Museum Has Fine Specimen Dominion Special Service. WANGANUI, June 22. The curator of the Wanganui Public Museum is completing the setting up of a fine specimen of an ounce, or snow leopard (felix uncia) of the Himalayas, a rare animal which resembles the cheetah in many points. The skin, which is particularly well preserved, was presented to the -museum by Mr. F. C. Glover, St. John's Hill, whose brother shot the animal about 1915. . . . The habitat of the ounce _is confined mainly to the higher levels of the Himalayas, and its range extends from approximately 9060 feet above sea level in winter to 18,000 feet in summer. In general, the ounce is a greyish white, extending to a creamy white in the under portions of the neck and body. It > s . thickly spangled with black spots and rings, the rings being confined to its sides. The Wanganui specimen measures a fraction over seven feet in length nose to the tip of the tail. Two striking features are the beautifully-marked and bushy tail, which is 3ft. lin. long, correspending exactly with the length of the animal’s body, and the remarkably small and cat-like head.
