Dominion Special' Service.
PALMERSTON N„ May 7.
Food production was not nearly as important ns it was 12 months ago, commented Professor W. Riddet, director of the Dairy Research Institute, in speaking nt the opening, yesterday, of the lentil annual dniry factory managers "week al llie institute. The supply of manpower mid materials to meet the enemy Is much more importmil now mid ;ii'rniigeiiieiits would have to be made to release all types of manpower. To meet .manpower changes readjusted systems ot manufacturing would have to be’devised to allow for less labour, or for substitute labour. “It might well happen that we might need to accept the assistance of women,” said Professor Riddet. "I would ask you earnestly, one mid all. not to turn down lightly the offers made by women. They are very keen to play their part,, They are being given their opportunity in Great Britain ; why should not they be given their opportunity here.” . Proceeding, Professor Riddet said it might be necessary for men to change from assistants in hatter factories Io assistants in cheese factories, and the Massey College authorities were willing to provide a practical course which would enable newcomers to the industry to work with comnmnscnse and, at least, some dexterity.
