WORK OF ARMY STAFF CRITICIZED
Appointment Of Business Manager Discussed
Dominion Special Service.
PALMERSTON N., May 7. “Some of the staff work must be pretty none “ s lid Mr. W. M. Sexton, at a meetin" of the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce, wl W n letters from the Associated Chambers of Commerce on the subject of appointment of a business niana"er for the army were being considered. He believed that Dannevirke troops who arrived here on Thursday had no hot meal waiting for them, and had to obtain tea and refreshments at the Y.M.G.A. The president, Mr. K. A. Henderson, said that the matter first arose through allegations of mismanagement at M aiouru Camp. For instance, it had been stated that 8/2 a case was being paid for apples there, when they were being practically dumped at Wellington. Air. Sexton siud he hail heard some rumours about Waiouru Camp, but it was difficult to get concrete evidence. Mr. Henderson said that the problem was a very big one. and the war might be over before it was rectified. Mr. J. A. Nash said it was very difficult to get information to lay before the Associated Chambers. Mr Henderson pointed out that the army wns a very big organization which had to be undertaken fairly suddenly. It. was further mentioned that cabbages were being sent in from Bulls to Palmerston North and then back to Ohakea, whereas they could have been sent, straight from Bulls to Ohakea. The chamber decided to reply to the Associated Chambers that it was difficult to obtain instances of lax business methods in the army, but the appointment of a business head, in its opinion, would be a useful step, and would also be of assistance to the taxpayer.
