BOWLS FINAL
Champion Of Champions Fours NEWTOWN WIN ON 20TH Newtown beat Hataitai, 28-14, on the twentieth end, in the final of the Wellington Bowling Centre’s champion of champion fours, which was played at the Wellington green ou Saturday morning. The Hataitai men played some good bowls, but the Newtown four were steadier, and toward the end of the game it was so apparent that they would win that the play lost most of its interest. The weather was ideal. Hataitai held their owu in the early stages. With six ends played they were leading, 6-5, but Newtown won the next three ends, adding eight to their total. Hataitai did uot catch up to Newtown again, though at the fourteenth end they were only three down. Newtown won the fifteenth, getting three. Then a disaster happened for Hataitai. The Hataitai No. 3 drew the shot with his first bowl and the sixteenth end, but his second took the jack across the head and gave it to Newtown. The Newtown skip drew another counter. That made the scores, Newtown 22, Hataitai 13. That end was the crucial one and Hataitai’s hopes of winning quickly faded. .Newtown got two from each of the remaining ends up to the twentieth, with the exception of the nineteenth, iu which the Hataitai No. 3 drew a shot that Newtown could not beat. The composition of the fours was as follows: Newtown: G. Bird, C. W. Davis, A. Hastings, E. G. Glennie (s.). Hataitai: T. M. Highet, E. A. Wallace, G. P. Anderson. B. T. Martin (s.).
