Victory Queen Carnival Committees Meet
> Each queen in the Victory Queen : Carnival was represented by her ex- , eeutive and a combined meeting of carnival committees in the Wellington Travel Club rooms yesterday afternoon, when arrangements were made for (he official opening of the carnival on February 2.1, and for a grand street pageant on February 28. The opening of the campaign will be marked by the holding of some major gathering in Wellington, the nature of which is yet to be decided. The six queens and attendant princesses will take part in this and will also be prominent in the street pageant the following week. Each queen will have four floats decorated in her colours in the procession, and with her six princesses will take her place on one. The various bodies, such as sports organizations, transport bodies, manufacturing and business concerns, will probably be represented on the other floats. Britannia and the three branches of the fighting services will be depicted also. On that day stalls will line the route which the parade will follow. The queens will have possibly six stalls each and these will be stalled with I helpers in special costumes. An endeavour will be made to establish a j public address system throughout the city, so that the crowds may be entertained with music that will give the necessary carnival atmosphere. Various contests, such as a baby show,-will most likely be held while the street pageant is on, and the day will come to a climax with a grand hall, similar event. Carnival Spirit. From city buildings it is hoped that, a good display of hunting will be made and the city council will be asked to provide coloured lights in the main thoroughfares while the queen carnival continues. Each Friday during this time a special carnival day will be held, and each queen will have one week allotted to her cause, this period to end on the Friday when the queen will be in possession of a specially-con-structed “a'ir-raid shelter” stall. The street procession on February 28 will have a controlling and assistant marshals. Mr. Tabrum, manager of the Majestic Theatre, will ■ assist in organizing this part of the carnival. Steps will be taken to have some floats representing countries of the Empire and Allied nations. It is hoped to include the lire brigade, Army nurses, a unit from Trentham Militar.v Camp, Legion of Frontiersmen, the Women's War Service Auxiliary, St. John Ambulance and Red Cross workers- among other units in the street pageant. Subject to confirmation, the procession will follow a route leading from Waterloo Quay to Jervois Quay, Cuba Street, Vivian Street, Kent Terrace, Courtenay Place. Manners Street, Willis Street, Lambton Quay and back to Waterloo Quay.
The Victory Queen Carnival will officially close on May 1-1. While it continues, arrangements have been made to indicate the positions of the various queens, from day to day, by means of a giant “barometer,” erected at a point of vantage on “The Dominion” building.
