CHEESE PRODUCTION
Step To Secure Additional
Output
SUPPLIES FOR BRITAIN
As a step toward securing an additional quantity of cheese this season in accordance with the undertaking given by the New Zealand Government •to the United Kingdom Government to produce and supply at least 15,000 tons more cheese than the quantity supplied last season, a special order has been made by the Minister of Agriculture under powers conferred on him by the Primary Industries Emergency Regulations. The effect of the order, which came into force on August 19 and appears in last night’s Gazette, is that occupiers of farm dairies affected by ■the order and thciy successors in occupation are required to carry on the same form of production as the past season. The order will firstly tie the milk supply from farm dairies to those cheese factories to which the milk supply was delivered during the 1939-40 season; secondly, prohibit the transfer of supplies from cheese factories; thirdly, tie the milk or cream supply from farm dairies to those creamery butter factories to which the milk or cream supply was delivered during the 1939-40 season, and which have lost or may lose by transfer to cheese factories more than two and a half per cent, of the supply (computed on butterfat basis) that was delivered to such creamery butter factories during the 1939-10 season; fourthly, prohibit the transfer of supplies from such creamery butter factories, except transfers of supply to cream factories. Provision is made for exemptions from the operation of the order in proper cases by the Director of the Dairy Division of the Department of Agriculture, or by the Assistant Director of that division, in respect of suppliers to cheese factories, and by Sir Francis Frazer, deputy chairman of the Executive Commission of Agriculture, in respect of suppliers to creamery butter factories to which the order applies.
