TAXING PAY OF MEN IN TERRITORIALS

Protest To The Minister A protest against the decision of the Government that the pay of members of the Territorial Forces undergoing continuous training should be assessable for income tax has 'been made by the executive of’the Wellington Regimental Association. The secretary, Mr. C. E. Singleton, has sent the following letter to the Minister of Defence, Mr. Jones:— At a meeting of the executive of this association the following resolution was adopted unanimously:— ‘‘That the executive of the Wellington Regimental Association considers it both illogical and unfair that the Minister of Defence should use the power conferred on him by subsections 2 and 3 of section 3 of the Land and Income Tax Amendment Act, 1939, to decide that the pay of members of the Territorial Forces undergoing continuous training should be assessable for income tax. The executive is unanimously of the opinion that no distinction should be made between members of the N.Z.E.F. who are definitely being trained for overseas ami members of the Territorial Forces whose services in New Zealand are quite as necessary a part of our war effort.” My executive feels no hesitation in asking you to reconsider your decision in view of the hardship that is being inflicted on many of the members of the Territorial unit. These men have voluntarily given their time, and, in many cases, at great financial sacrifice, to servo their country, and now that your attention has been drawn to the matter my executive feels that yon will not delay taking the necessary remedial action.
