HUTT FIRE BRIGADE
Retaining Fee To Be Paid To Auxiliary Members The chairman of the Fire Prevention Committee, Cr. C. J. Ashton,, reported to the Lower' Hutt Borough Council last night that the committee bad met members of the'volunteer section of the lire brigade in conference, and among subjects discussed was a suggestion by the committee that the auxiliary members should be paid a retaining fee of 2/b a week, for which they would be required to attend the weekly drill. The scheme also provided for the payment of the firemen at the rate of 2/6 an hour for attendance at fires. At this conference the principle was generally approved and the meeting appointed three representatives of the fire brigade to confer further with the fire prevention committee to draw up the rules which would govern these payments. This further meeting was held, and it was pleasing to be able to report that au intimation had been received from the fire brigade to the effect that the volunteer members unanimously approved of the Suggested arrangement. The committee recommended that the principle of payment be approved, operative as from June 1, and also the rules as submitted. The committee’s recommendations were adopted. ' . , Cr. 11. V. Horlor said citizens of Lower Hutt owed a debt of gratitude to the volunteer members of the brigade, who lin’d given willing service oyer a long period of years. The mayor. Mr. Andrews, said the borough council had got on weU for many rears with a volunteer .fire brigade, and the men who had carried out the work .so well were entitled to the gratitude of citizens. .
