Lighting Of Centennial Memorial QUESTION OF COST A recotnniendatiou by the Reserves Comiuittee that as the cost ot lighting properly the Provincial Centennial Memorial was considered excessive tor the council a deputation he sent to the Hutt Valley Electric Power Board, was carried at last night’s meeting of the Petone Borough Council. Gaynor said that the council had agreed that it. was lit ting that such a memorial should be permanently lighted, but the cost was one which the committee would have dillicult.y in facing. The object of the deputation would be to see if some more satisfactory arrangement could be reached as the memorial was .something in which all local bodies in the area were interested. Councillors J. Burns and J. R. Gaynor were appointed a deputation to wait on the power board. Following receipt of a report that work on a building in the borough had been commenced before the permit had been granted, it was decided to instruct the town clerk to take proceedings against offenders in the future. /. A petition was received from 'residents in the vicinity of the Adelau.e Street extension that a road and rootpath be put in front of the recently-erect-ed houses and 'some street lights erected. It was decided to advise, the petitioners that nothing could be done till the area was taken over by the council when the Housing Department had completed its operations. , , ~ < An application by the Red Cross Appeal Committee for permission to hold a street day on May .17 was granted. The Hutt Valley Motor Boat Club wrote concerning the splendid rescue work carried out on lie Petoue beach over a long period bv Mr.. J. Fishburn and his son, mid urged that rhe council should forward a recommendation to the Royal Humane Society that these efforts should receive recognition. Cr. Gaynor said he knew from local repute that the Fishburns bad done wonderful work. ' It was decided to forward the letter to the Royal Humane Society and ask for the procedure. ’
