Centennial Eights At Easter RACE AT WELLINGTON Only four entries have been received tlii.s year for the centennial eight-oared rowing championship to be held on Port. Nicholson on Easter Saturday, March 23. Last year, when the race was rowed on Otago 1 liirhoiir, there were five cutties and in 1937, when the race was last rowed in Wellington, eight crews competed. BUS venr, however, though tile donations have been increased from £3O and 110 to £l9 and £lO, Hie only associations to enter have been Wanganui, Auckland, Otago and Wellington. . The race will be rowed over a course of 2$ miles which provides a gruelling test of stamina, particularly if tile water is not absolutely calm. The race has been won for the past three years by the Wanganui Union crew, which' has represented Wanganui. This year, however, Aramoho, who were second to New South Wales at the New Zealand centennial championships, will represent Wanganui. In a recent test on the Wanganui River, Aramoho in a much inferior boat, beat Wanganui Union over a two-niilc course and thus earned the right Io compete at the eight-oared championships. The judges for the race will be Messrs. W. J. Gaudin, D. R. Menzies and A. Mack, the starter Mr. M. A. Turner, and the umpire, Mr. C. E. Bridge. Mr. A. Ross will be the New Zealand Rowing Council representative. A special train will follow the race, which is timed to start at 10 a.m. The procedure is that one train will leave from I’etone and another from Wellington. They will meet at Ngahauranga and be joined into one train. Because of lack of support, th© North v. South Island race lias been cancelled.
