ANOTHER CROWDED DAY

Perfect Weather For Races At Trentham LORD AND LADY WILLINGDON ATTEND The promise of a perfect summer’s day, though earlier in the morning it had appeared somewhat unsettled, drew another record crowd at Trentham on Saturday for the continuation of the Wellington Racing Club’s centennial summer meeting. Trainloads of people and a constant stream of motor-ears from Wellington began to arrive at the course long before the first race, and thousands of patrons filled the stands for the opening event.

The meeting was attended by the Marquess and Marchioness of Willingdon, who are visiting Wellington for the centennial celebrations. They were accompanied by Lord Errington, private secretary to Lord AVillingdon. The heavy clouds which threatened rain cleared away, and the sun shone brightly for the earlier part of the meeting. A light north-west wind prevented the atmosphere from becoming too humid, and though clouds obscured the sun during the afternoon, no rain fell and conditions were extremely pleasant throughout.

Fashions were again up to the minute, and some outstanding ensembles were to be seen. The vogue was for light, cool frocks and suits. The same type of smart toilettes as distinguished Thursday’s gathering was in evidence, and tailored linens, fine silk ensembles, and georgette were popular choices. The mild day induced many. women to come prepared for the sun, and large hats were popular choices. Many feminine racegoers, however, still preferred the small pillbox or doll’s hat chapeaux, softening them with the still popular veils and veiling, which a number wore over the face as a protection from wind or sunburn.

■Soft, misty blues, mauvesi and dusky pinks and cyclamen shades were popular and flattering but the more sophisticated black or navy with white was worn by many. Lord and Lady Willingdon arrived before lunch and were met by the pre-

i sideut of the racing club, Mr. Eric Riddiford, and Mrs. Riddiford. Lady Willingdou’s softly draped frock was of a delicate mossy green and was worn with a high-crowned Havana brown straw hat finished with a large bow. She carried! a finely woven fan of -native grass, edged with black which she used continually. Mrs. Riddiford was in a tailored black and white patterned silk frock and boxed hip coat, finished at the neck with narrow white piping and bow. Her hat. was of black seisel straw, the upturned brim being of white. Banked Flowers. Unusual floral decorations made the official luncheon table in the stewards’ room very attractive. They were of massed hydrangea blooms in blue and mauve arranged with pink carnations, the whole effect being arranged flush with the white-covered tables, a fringe of asparagus fern finishing each motif. A large bank of these flowers was placed at the centre, and at each corner there were smaller arrangements. Bowls of mauve, blue and pink sweet peas and gypsophila decorated the other tables. Those invited to luncheon at the official table were the Marquess and Marchioness of Willingdon, Senator P. A. Al. McBride and Mrs. Mcßride, Viscount Errington, Major-General J. E. Duigan, Commander A. B. Fanshawe, Group Captain H. W. L. Saunders and Mrs. Saunders, Mr. G. Gould. Mr. Martin Greenwood, Mr. A. S. Elworthy, Mr. D. AV. J. Gould, Mr. and Mrs. H. D.
