Professor J. Adamson

LONG SERVICE AT VICTORIA COLLEGE

The death of I’rofessor James Adamson, former Dean of the Faculty of Law at Victoria University College, occurred at his residence, Salamanca Road, Wellington, yesterday morning, after a prolonged illness. Professor. Adamson was I>orn iu Forfar, Scotland, and educated at Dundee High School and the University of Edinburgh, whore be graduated M.A and LL.B. He was appointed to one of the law chairs and made Dean of the Faculty of Law at Victoria College in 1908. Till his retirement because of ill health at the beginning of the present session he was an energetic, successful and highly esteemed teacher of the various subjects under his charge. He served as chairman of the Professorial Board, commencing his term in 1915, and represented the Professorial Board on the college council on two occasions. He was also a member of the Academic Board of the University of New Zealand.

Professor Adamson was a serious and earnest student with an unusual knowledge of the departments of law in which he specialized. None of the students who came under him failed to recognize in him an admirable teacher and true friend. He was a man of very wide reading in various directions and won the respect and admiration of a large number of personal friends. As a teacher of law he had very high ideals, and during his whole career as a professor he exerted himself to improve the standard of teaching and examination of the subject. Professor Adamson is survived by his wife, whom he married soon after be came to New Zealand. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon after a service in St. John’s Church.
