ANNUAL REUNION OF BRIGADE

There was no gainsaying the. fact that Petone was a fine field- for lire insurance, and insurance interests wished that there were many towns similar to it in this respect, said Mr. C. M. .Miller in responding to the toast of the Petone Fire Board at the forty-eighth annual reunion of the Petone Fire Brigade last night. Mr. Miller said. the brigade’s efficiency saved the insurance companies a good- deal of money. .Superintendent J. R. Gaynor said the board had always been a good one, equally alive to the interests of the town, the brigade and' personnel, in the 23 years he had been superintendent. The mayor of Petone, Mr. London, as board chairman, said that in the discipline of the brigade there was a quality needed in these days. Sir. J. Huggan, another member, said that last year properties valued at £10,400 caught fire in Petone, and because of the brigade’s good work the fire loss was only £l3OO. Messrs. A. L. Garbutt, J. Kerr and H. L. Firth also responded to the toast of the board. Deputy Superintendent O. Silbery, proposing the toast of the borough council, said that the brigade’s thanks were due to it for the provisions of an outstanding ground for demonstration purposes. The deputy-mayor, Mr. J. C. Burns, responded. Foreman Shardlow proposed "Visiting Brigades,” and Superintendent Gaynor and Motorman Simpson proposed the toast of “Local Industries." Foundation members of the brigade, ex-Superintendent Lepper and ex-Captain Horne, attended. Service Honours. The mayor made the following presentations :— Gold Star, 25 years, Fireman J. Hanna ; also two years’ service bar. Gold bar, 35 years’ service, Superintendent J. R. Gaynor. Silver bar, 23 years, Foreman Shardlow. Silver bar, nine years, Fireman House., Two years’ 'bar, completing 13 years, Fireman Horne. Two years’ bar, 23 years' service, Fireman Brown. Phare Cup, Motorman Seiwood. Trophy for fastest time, dry event, Motorman Seiwood; wet event, Fireman Horne. Gaynor Cup for Koro Koro members, Fireman Wilson. Hartuey bowl, Foreman Shardlow, Fireman Sherson and i£otorman Simpson. Items were given by Messrs. J. Evans, Jaggers, Lafferty, A. Edwards, D. Hopa, AV. Marshall, K. Rigby, W. Vaughan, R. Emerson,’ N. Edwards, R. Williams, and 11. Evison.
