SOCCER CONTROL

Management Committee And Club Officials PROBLEMS DISCUSSED To mark the close of the season, the management committee of the Wellington Football Association last night entertained club secretaries and members of the referees and interhouse associations, when suggestions were put forward for the better and smoother control of the game. The chairman of the management committee, Mr. J. Meltzer, presided, and Mr. J. J. Roberts, president of the association, was also present.

The season had been eventful and from the point of view of finance the committee had reason for satisfaction, said Mr. Meltzer. The committee had been able to meet the increased expenditure caused by the engagement of Mr. J. R. Sheffield as official coach without calling on reserve funds and the number of teams had shown an increase. In the season just ended there were 121 teams, including schools. That represented about 1250 players and, counting referees and other officials, there were thus at least 1500 people taking an active part in the game every Saturday.

To the players the committee owed a debt of gratitude for their loyalty in turning out every Saturday and the success of the season was due in no small measure to them. Mr. Meltzer also paid a tribute to the referees for their work during the season and to Mr, Brewer, custodian at the Basin Reserve, for his unfailing courtesy and attention. The work of Mr. B. A. Milkin for boys’ football in Wellington was also eulogized by Mr. Meltzer, who said that without Mr. Mabin the com mittee would be hard put to it to control boys’ football. Mr. Meltzer thanked the committee for their loyal cooperation during the year and praised the secretary, Mr. AV. J. Arcus, for his administrative ability. Mr. Roberts thanked the committee for the able way in which it had controlled the game during the season. The meeting then discussed informally various aspects of the game aud problems encountered during the season.
