HAWERA GALLOPS
Preparations For Otaki Dominion Special Service HAAVERA, September 26. Conditions were ideal for training operations at Hawera this morning, when both the plough and the outside of die course proper were available for last work. The grass was fairly heavy before the breakfast interval, but dried considerabl.y later in the morning. Most interest was centred on candidates z with engagements at Otaki. On the course proper Notium (Sexton) hit out with his usual freedom over five furlongs in 1.8. He appears nicely placed in the open seven at Otaki. It will not be on the score of condition if he fails to show up. Fiancee (Ryan) completed three furlongs smartly in 39 2-5, a good effort in soft going. ' She has gone on the right way since finishing third at AVauganui and the speedy Siegfried filly promises to make matters interesting for Sleeveless in the five furlong hack event on Saturday. , , Mount Valvern (Poi) completely overshadowed Sea Link (Toki) throughout half a mile in 56. Sen Link has displayed little galloping ability since joining 11. Scally's stable in the autumn, and she does not impress as a payable racing proposition. Chief Lord (Ryan) occupied 54* over the same ground. He may require a race or two before lie is seen to advantage. .However, he should be at his best during the summer months. The two-year-old Night Fox—Pouma filly Calliope (Graham) in L. E. George's stable beat Radio Call (Farland) 'decisively in a two-furlong sprint, in 25 4-5. The former, though a trifle on the small side, is endowed with an abundance of speed, and she ghould not be hard to place in juvenile events. Calliope will race in the colours of Mrs. E. Moran, owner of Ned- Cuttie. Vai Pere (Farland) was not bustled to traverse half a mile in 54. Recent racing lias sharpened him up, and he may not remain long in maiden ranks. It is doubtful whether he will be taken to Otaki, ,where the large field which is likely to face the starter in the novice event would find him at a disadvantage. He.is a slow beginner, and has raced greenly in his few appearances to date. The Bulandshar —Sunbar colt Brahman (Holland) pleased more than Red Myosotis (Sexton) at the end of three furlongs next to the rails on the two-year-old track in 43. The going on this track was very soft. Brahman, a fine type of youngster, is making rapid strides in his, preparation. On the plough, Race Call (Farland) got to the end of half a mile in 53. He has been entered in sprint events at Masterton. Winsome Lu was let off with strong pace work. She did not enjoy the best of luck in the running of the principal event at Marton, but her strong finishing effort to dead-beat for second indicated that she is due for an early return to the winning list. With a strong rider up, her turn may come at Otaki, Horses owned by Mr. A. McMullian, Stratford, and formerly under the care of H. Seally, Hawera, have had e. change of quarters, and they in future will be prepared at Stratford. Mr. McMullian has raced on a fairly extensive scale since joining the ranks of owners some two years ago. Horses affected in the change include Diamond Cutter, Amoroso, Alexcelia and the yearlings Swynford Alaid, Plato Boy and Plato Lad. The stallion Plato has also been transferred to Stratford. Disturbed, who carried the colours of Mr. McMullian during the winter, is still in Scally’s charge.
