WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Wellington Beats Manawatu MARGIN OF ONE GOAL In a thrilling women’s basketball match played under American rules in the Boys’ Institute gymnasium, Wellington, on Saturday night, the Wellington team beat Manawatu by one goal. The game was played at a fast pace throughout, with Wellington showing much better teamwork than their opponents. They had an early lead of six points, which was maintained till five minutes from full time, when Manawatu made a brilliant recovery which just failed to bring victory. Poor shooting in the first two quarters of the game lost the visitors many points, but later B. Booker treated the spectators to some brilliant goals. T. Smith, for Wellington, was also outstanding in this direction, and it was through her efforts that the home team held the advantage throughout. All players fulfilled expectations, and the two captains, J. Christian, for Manawatu, and G. Anderson, for Wellington, set good examples. Both are tall, and they had interesting duels for possession at the centre position. The teams were:— Wellington: Guards, K. Bowyer aud S. Clark; centre, G. Anderson; forwards. T. Smith and R. Edwards; reserve, M. Thomson. Manawatu: Guards, J. Johnson and S. Anderson; centre, J. Christian; forwards, B. Booker and M. Gregory. The scorers for Wellington were T. Smith (12 points), G. Anderson (4), M. Thomson (2) and R. Edwards (2). Manawatu, B. Booker (12 points), M. Gregory (4) and J. Christian (2). The referees were Messrs. W. E. Sloan and B. McKenzie. After the match the two teams were the guests of the 'Wellington Public Service Sports Society.
