WELLINGTON CRICKET

Mr. W. Christophersen New Sole Selector GAMES START OCTOBER 14 i The Wellington Cricket Association will have a new sole selector for representative teams for the 1939-40 season. Mr. A. W. Duncan, who has held the office for the last four years, advised the management committee of the association last night that he was unable to accept office again, and Mr. W. J. R. Christophersen, a member of the Kllbirnie club, was appointed to the position. Mr. Duncan, the retiring sole selector, wrote as follows: — “We are now entering upon a further season, and I want to take this early opportunity of advising you that it will be quite impossible for me to continue as selector for the association. I feel that a change should be made from time to time in the office of sole selector, and 1 am quite sure that a suitable man can be found from the manv excellent supporters of the game in Wellington. Might I just take this opportunity of thanking you for the many courtesies I have received at your hands, and also express my thanks to the members of the committee for the wholehearted assistance that they have given me.” The chairman, Mr. J. H. Phillipps, referred to the loyal service Mr. Duncan had given to the association as sole selector of representative teams during the last four years, and moved that the committee record its high appreciation of those services. The motion was carried unanimously. Mr. A. Ronaldson then moved that the committee reaffirm the principle of a sole selector. The motion was seconded by Mt. Duncan. Mr. Phillipps said he was in favour of a sole selector if the right man ■could be found, but personally he did not think there was a man available to succeed Mr. Duncan in the office. Mr. E. J. Aim supported the principle of a sole selector, but agreed with the chairman that there was not a suitable man in sight. He could not see that it would be a retrograde step to appoint a selection committee of three. Mr. Ronaldson: If you haven’t got a man capable of being a sole selector vou certainly haven't got three men capable of carrying out the duty satisfactorily. One selector will surely make fewer mistakes than three. Upon being put to the vote, Mr. Ronaldson’s motion to reaffirm the principle of a sole selector was carried almost unanimously. Mr. Aim then asked if be would be in order in moving that a selection committee of three be appointed for the 1939-40 season. The chairman said he personally favoured a selection committee of three, but the committee would place itself in a ridiculous position if it were to pass such a motion after just having reaffirmed the principle of a sole selector. Further discussion was taken in committee. Upon resuming in open meeting, the chairman announced that Mr. W. J. R. Christopherson had been appointed sole selector of representative teams for the ensuing season. Senior Championship. It was decided that the senior championship for the coining season should be played straight out as far as Saturdays were available. The first round would be played, and then teams would be redrawn, and the competition would be continued for the number of Saturdays available. It was decided that the Past v. Present players’ match, which was inaugurated last year, should be continued this season, the gate takings to go toward the coaching fund. Game to Go On. The New Zealand Cricket Council wrote, stating that it appealed to all associations, clubs and cricketers to maintain their competitions as far as possible during the coming season. In doing so they would be fulfilling a national duty and rendering a useful service to the community generally. In so doing it was understood that cricketers would not allow cricket to interfere witii military obligations. Tiie council further advised that, in view of the war conditions, the committee had decided to cancel the biennial conference in November. In answer to a question, the chairman said that grade championship competitions would begin on October 14.
