ACTRESS MAKES GOOD

“The Wise of Ann Parnet,” by Michael Foster (London: Constable).

Mr. Michael Foster, author of that widely-read, lengthy novel “American Dream,” is less ambitious in his new book, yet is successful in producing a pleasing work. He does this in spite of using a much-worn central theme, that of the actress of lowly beginnings who rises to the top of her profession. Mr. Foster succeeds, not because he introduces.any particularly new twist to the situation, but because of the freshness of his approach and the sincerity and sureness with which he draws his characters. They are . interesting ehough in themselves to compensate for any deficiencies in the plot.
