MAKARA SCHOOL PUPILS

Recent Concert And Outing

The annual concert of the Alakara school proved a popular event. Items of a varied programme were well-re-ceived by the large audience. A play, “Topsy,” by the infants, was specially popular. The walls of the hall and the tables were filled with art work and handwork. The needlework and gailypainted wooden toys were a credit to the pupils. The chairman, Air. Gaskin, presented the usual awards gained during the year. He expressed the appreciation of both the committee and parents for the keen interest the teachers and pupils had taken in the school. In the fancy dress competition, Fay Harrison gained first place for the cheapest dress and Betty Bowren second place. For the best dress, June Giddings was first and Ijeverley Bowler second.

Supper was handed round by the senior pupils.

Through the generosity of Mr. M. S. Galloway, Miss Cooper, Messrs. Martin and Moult, members of the Red Cross Society, the pupils of the Makara school were treated to a most enjoyable outing to Wellington. zVfter delivering Christmas gifts to an orphanage, Miss Lissington, a Red Cross representative, conducted the party to several places of interest. Because the children were closely connected with dairying interests, perhaps the thrill of the day was the fascinating machinery and efficient handling of milk supplies at the city milk depot. The children expressed their gratitude to those who had been responsible for such an instructive and happy outing.
