A sentence of 18 months’ reformative detention was passed by Mr. Justice Kennedy in the Supreme Court today on Itoliert Turnbull Hutchison Rue, aged 35, former cashier and rates clerk for tlie Oamaru Borough Council, on a charge of misappropriating £3Bs of Hie council’s funds. For accused it was staled that soon after Ids marriage lie underwent three operations and for IS months was unable to work. Tlie next two years be spent on relief work, being then aj>pointed cashier to the Oamaru Borough Council. He was then heavily in debt and pressed by creditors, but nevertheless no defalcations occurred in tlie first three years. When he did take tlie money it. was not. used tor gambling or drinking.
