Farewell
More than 100 members of the Education Department’s Correspondence School gathered in Wellington to bid farewell to the headmaster, Dr. A. G. Butchers yesterday. Dr. Butchers will leave by the Aorangi from Auckland next Tuesday to attend an international conference on correspondence education at Victoria, British Columbia, beginning on August 22. Mr. E. N. Le Petit presided in the absence of Dr. J. Nicol, senior secondary assistant, who is indisposed. Mr. Le Petit spoke of Dr. Butchers’s mission and the services which he had rendered for the advancement of the correspondence school. The speaker said, that Dr. Butchers would give much to the conference, and he felt sure that he would return with valuable information for the furtherance of the work of the schools.
Dr. J. W. Mcllraith, chief inspector of primary schools, said Dr. Butchers had been an indefatigable worker. In extending congratulations to Dr. Butchers on behalf of the department, he added that he knew of no better investigator of educational affairs than Dr. Butchers, and he was sure, he said, that he would return with the best possible information concerning correspondence schools. Replying, Dr. Butchers outlined the itinerary of his tour, mentioning the various cities he would visit. This would necessitate much night travelling so that he could complete his investigations at the various centres en route during the day.
