ONEKAKA IRON PROJECT
Views Of New Zealand Workers’ Union
Reference to statements made in Christchurch recently by Mr. C- C. Davis, who, following a visit to Australia, commented upon the Government’s Onekaka iron and steel project, was made yesterday at the annual conference of the New Zealand Workers’ Union. The following resolution was carried: — “That this national conference of the New Zealand Workers’ Union, representing 30,000 workers, takes exception to the remarks published by Mr. C. C. Davis, Christchurch, regarding State enterprise and Onekaka. We affirm that with loyal and efficient workers and capable administration of which Mr. Davis has no monopoly, the Government’s action in safeguarding for our people for all time this valuable asset, and thus creating a much needed national industry, is in the best interests of the people of New Zealand. We further pledge our loyalty and cooperation to the Government to bring to successful fruition this enterprise, and we express the opinion that where private enterprise has failed, the people’s Government will succeed.” The motion was introduced by the Hon. F. E. Lark, and was seconded by Mr. J. G. Leckie, Timaru, who said Mr. Davis’s remarks were obviously a propagandist attempt to discredit the Labour Government.
