“THE MARQUISE”

One of the most entertaining plays ever produced by the AVellington Repertory Society, “The Marquise,” will have but two more performances at the Concert Chamber. In it Noel Coward has chosen the sensuous eighteenth century court of France as a background for his witty dialogue. It is a comedy of family complications. The daughter of one nobleman and the son of his neighbour become betrothed, to the delight of their respective fathers, but not to their own delight. In fact, the girl hugs the boy in really affectionate and spontaneous manner only When he promises not to marry her. Later the former mistress of the girl’s father, now rather a Tartuffe, returns and inflicts herself upon him, and it is not long before there occurs a denouement that surprises everybody and opens the way for the girl to marry the man she loves, her father’s secretary. 'There is ample spicy, but never indelicate, wit. The stage setting is notable for its authentic detail and the members of the cast play their parts admirably, even down to the maiA This character is portrayed by Madame Finlayson, who makes her few appearances and speaks her brief lines.with an ability that is one of the things that adds polish to the production. "The Marquise” will be presented again to-night and to-morrow night.
