MONDAY’S WRESTLING

The stage is now set for the opening of the 1938 wrestling season and the Wellington association will stage its first match at the Town Hall on Monday night when the contestants in the professional heavyweight contest will be Leo Jensen, a Danish-Canadian, and Joe Tonti, an Italian-American. As the two men are of different nationalities but are similar in size and build, and as both believe in fast, aggressive tactics, there is no doubt that the year’s operations will get away to a thrilling start. The selection of the Dominion Union’s men was again handled by Mr. Walter Miller, who travelled oyer the United States and Canada, picking only men whom he had seen in action and whom he knew would appeal to New Zealand audiences. The result is that the union has at its command men who have reached a high standard in their profession, and two of the most likely prospects among them are undoubtedly Tonti and Jensen. Tonti, who is reputed to be the strongest upside-down man in the world, will give a demonstration of his strength tomorrow by pulling an automobile along Clyde Quay, with his teeth, while walking on his hands. This exhibition will take place at eleven o’clock in the morning and will commence at the Oriental Bay-Clyde Quay intersection. The car to be used has been loaned by Dominion Motors.
