WORK AT HAWERA
Wanganui Candidates ■ Dominion Special Service. J ' Hawera, February 22. ‘ ■; Conditions were ideal for training operations on the Hawera tracks this morning,, when the local contingent for Wanganpi were allotted their final gallops. of the course proper and the plough were in good order, although the going was not fast. ' On the plough Notium (Cole) strode over five furlongs in 1.5, after running the first three, in 37J. He is in capital order, and is provided an excellent opportunity to make-'amends for recent failures. In his engagement on Thursday, P- Atkins is mentioned as.his probable rider. Naughty 'Marietta (Hawkes), who claims an. engagement on the second day, occupied 115 1-5 for a similar effort over the same< ground. Student Prince (Cole) registered 1.5 He should give a good account of himself in the Victory Hack, with his handy impost. Golden Orchid (Pepperill) reeled off three- furlongs in 39. She will have her next' outing at the forthcoming Opunake fixture.
‘ Ruling Ltidy (Pepperill) sprinted two furjongs comfortably in 26. This two-year-old IJulanut filly is making good progress. : Amorose (Monkley) was under restraint to stay with Swift Sand (Cole) at the close of five furlongs in 1.8. There is little: doubt about the former’s gallopitig ability, but he lacks stamina. ' Lucrece (Toki) comfortably defeated Cytos (Monkley) over half a mile in 52 3-5.
On the course proper from a barrier start, Gold Glare (Toki) and Fafner (Hawkes) got to the end of five, furlongs in I.SJ. Both novices are capable of good efforts in the maiden event at 'Wanganui, especially the former, providing he leaves the mark satisfactorily l '.' The Wanganui Cup candidate Lowenberg (Monkley) started from the fivefurlong post at the conclusion of a round of paeework, anti after running the first two in 251 was going nicely at the end in 1.5. With an uninterrupted run on Thursdaj 7 he should be prominent at the finish.
Another cup candidate in Sergia (Monkley) was apportioned two rounds at threequarter pace, and no fault can be found with her condition. She has come to no harm from her racing at New Plymouth and Hawera, and is assured of a large following. Dark Eagle (Hawkes) shaded Prime Quality (Monkley) at the conclusion of half a mile in 51 3-5. 'The former has benefited by his racing at Hawera, and may be capable of a surprise. Prime Quality is likely to require plenty of time, and may not do himself justice until next season.
Hawera riding engagements announced include:—R. Sargent, Student Prince; J. Toki, Gold Glare; R. Glading, Sergia; L. Monkley, Amoroso an.d one of O. Cox’s two-year-olds. "
Trilitha has contracted a slight skin infection and although the ailment is not considered serious she is declining her Wanganui engagements.
